sas|sa|fras «SAS uh fras», noun.
1. a slender tree of eastern North America that has fragrant, yellow flowers, bluish-black fruit, and light, soft, yellowish wood. It belongs to the laurel family. Its powdered leaves make up the Creole spice gumbo filé.
2. the aromatic dried bark of its root, used in medicine and to flavor candy, soft drinks, and tea. Artificial sassafras flavoring is commonly used in root beer. Sassafras also yields an aromatic volatile oil used in making perfume.
